Mary Huycke (Sellon) and Dan Smith are certified professional, co-active coaches who have been trained and certified through an ICF (International Coach Federation) accredited school. Having over 200 hours of coaching training, both Dan & Mary are also ordained ministers in the United Methodist Church. They have separately and together pastored, resourced and coached churches, pastors and judicatories engaged in development and redevelopment.

In 2003 they created CourageousSpace a non-profit dedicated to helping pastors and congregations flourish.

Dan has real talent for helping people get to the heart of things and stay focused on their desired goals. He's a master at helping his coaching clients navigate the urgent and stay focused on the important. During his career, Dan has served in a variety of judicatory positions (district superindtendent, council director) as well as a pastor of churches. He co-developed the Western Jurisdiction Academy for Congregational Development for his denomination.

Mary's specialty is helping groups and teams grow in their effectiveness by honing their focus and increasing their positivity. As a personal coach, she works primarly with pastors around issues of call and balance. Mary has pastored in a variety of settings including redevelopment and new church start and taught at the United Methodist National School for Congregational Development in the area of leadership and change.

Together, Dan & Mary developed and led the three-year academy of leadership and congregational development required for all pastors new to the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference beginning in 1998. They recently finished training 9 leaders who will continue the work.

Committed to the learning and growth of pastors and congregations, Mary & Dan are the authors of Practicing Right Relationship. (The Alban Institute, 2005) which helps pastors and church leaders address the relational aspects of being a healthy church. They are two of the the co-authors of Alban's Redeveloping the Congregation, (2003) and are contributors to When a Congregation is Betrayed, Alban's guide for congregational leaders dealing with the fallout of clergy misconduct.
